Garden Interlopers

25/7/2013

Picture
Today I noticed a new visitor to my garden... a fungi of some description that is happily growing on some decaying wood mulch that i spread round the garden last summer to preserve moisture.
The little cuplets are about 1cm in diameter....

It's a royal Boy!

I remember a quote from somewhere and stored it away for just such a day...
"One should never wear matching socks"
Came in handy today, as I woke to hear the news that a Royal Boy has come into the world, such nice news I thought i would sport my Union Jack socks I purchased in Edinburgh.
Could find only one, but thats OK as the other was an orphan too...
So stripes for inspiration today whilst i was photographing bottles...

Full Moon

22/7/2013

Picture
This rather blurry photo captures a canoeist paddling past as I was taking photos of the full moon.  It is on a small lagoon near my home, it was formed in what was an ox bow of the Manawatu River.
It is home for ducks, geese -  white and black, terns, and lots of other bird life.

silvereye company

Picture
Today i was tidying up the garden, noting that the daffodils have started to shoot throught the soil, and I was kept company by some little friendly Silvereye birds.
The silvereye (Zosterops lateralis) – also known as the wax-eye, or sometimes white eye – is a small olive green forest bird with distinctive white rings around its eyes. They were self introduced in the 1800s and now have a wide distribution throughout New Zealand.

Today was my eldest son's birthday, and I sent him a screen print I had pulled from a photograph taken when he was about 5 years old.

hug a gum Tree

16/7/2013

Picture
A bleak wintry Sunday, but I decided I needed to wrap up warm and bike along side the river that is a raging torrent due to the amount of rain we have just had, and retrieve some bark that had come down from a stand of Eucalyptus trees. They looked magnificent today against the grey sky, and I am delighted to find that they are part of our local park and they have their botanical names:
Eucalyptus gregsoniana...Wolgan Snow Gum; E.scopania...Wallangara White; E.obliqua...Messmate Stringybark; E.rossii...Scribbly Gum.
Enough inspiration in the names for a page of Calligraphy!

Fresh Brown Eggs

15/7/2013

Picture
A friend who owns a small farm left a dozen eggs on my doorstep today...genuine free range....
I wanted to capture the slightly different browns, they would have been a good drawing exercise.... not today!
