Baskets
Baskets for stones made from found pieces of rusted fencing wire, known as no.8 in New Zealand. Made in situ, inspired by rugged landscape and worn stones from the Maruia River, Springs Junction, Sth Island New Zealand.
Woven basket from NZ flax, This style of basket is tradtionally known as a Waikawa, and used to carry food and goods.I made it to contain special items. The flax is woven as soon as it is cut, and after a few weeks it dries and strinks allowing for airflow.
A Melon basket, named due to its shape. this was made in a class, at the Craft Cottage in the Royal Botanical Gardens, Melbourne. The Gardeners and the Basket makers work together, in that any suitable excess herbage from the gardens is delivered to the cottage. A wonderful arrangement. I was purposely making it look rustic, and titled it "the fascinator" as it reminded me of the hat decorations that I had seen around Melbourne at that time, for the Melbourne Cup races.
A knotted basket using yarn spun with copper wire. The inspiration came from the shape of the Eucalyptus gum nuts.
A coiled basket, randomly sewn in blanket stitch with red thread. The coil is made from wire, covered with yarn made from old Sari threads.
Autumn again, the grapes have been harvested, leaving runners for basketry...
Inspired by bird's nests...made from flax fibre, silk and paper scraps.
